Excerpted from Prologue
l989 NEW YORK CITY
Carol holds the receiver as far away as the cord will stretch. Fred
is screaming into the mouthpiece clear across the United States.
"Don’t you think thirty-five days in Europe is enough?
Now another side trip? You’re taking advantage!"
My husband is always so liberal.
Could he be jealous? No. That’s silly! He has nothing to be
jealous about. Fernando is just my dear friend and soon-to-be boss.
That’s all!
Then Fred says what’s really
on his mind. "Everyone in my office is talking about you running
all over the world with another man!"
How can she tell her husband that
even though she still loves him, she cares for this other man, too?
How can she make him understand that this is a different kind of
feeling, a friend-ship, nothing more?
Fernando is waving the tickets while
she’s on the phone in New York. It’s only a few days’
detour to Bermuda. Carol listens to her heart and goes with him.
The island looks deserted. They are in the boondocks. Then comes
the crash. In one split second, they are hurled into the air as
their taxicab is rear-ended by a drunken truck driver. Fernando
and Carol are in an ambulance on their way to the hospital. Carol
is on her way to a world where reality no longer exists……..
